Nut
Take one look at a shelled walnut and it’s immediately obvious what it is meant to fuel: it looks exactly like a miniature human brain! Historically native to the Mediterranean region, walnuts stand entirely alone in the nut kingdom due to their unique fat profile. While other nuts are rich in monounsaturated fats, walnuts are overwhelmingly packed with plant-based polyunsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids, making them an essential longevity food.
If buying whole walnuts in the shell, choose ones that look completely sealed and feel heavy for their size. If buying shelled walnut halves, look for pale, plump pieces. Steer clear of any that smell slightly like paint or oil, which indicates the delicate Omega-3 oils have turned rancid.
Because walnuts are exceptionally high in highly delicate Omega-3 polyunsaturated fats, they are the most sensitive of all nuts to heat and air. Keep them in a tightly sealed container in your refrigerator if you plan to eat them over a few weeks, or pop them in the freezer to preserve their fresh, buttery flavor for up to a year.
